How to plan with intention

We have 20 weeks left in the year of 2019. Can you believe it?

Even though I’ve accomplished a lot, there are still some boxes left to be checked on my list of goals for this year. I was beginning to feel down about it, thinking I was running out of time. But I reminded myself that 20 weeks is more than enough time to regroup and make significant progress.

Have you started creating your end of the year plan? While planning the next four months, it’s important to be mindful and intentional about how you want to feel and the support you’ll need while accomplishing your goals.

I know that you want to simply get it all done. But, you have control over the energy you bring to the execution of those goals. And, it makes a big difference.

For example, I have some major events coming up this fall that will require a lot of my time and energy. So, I made sure to give myself room in my plan and schedule to adjust and get settled.

Also, the goals I’ve set bring up a lot of fear, as they will stretch me outside of my comfort zone. So, I made sure to plan for utilizing the necessary tools I need to feel supported as I push through the fear.

When I help clients set goals and create their plans, there are four questions that I ask them to help them keep in mind how they want to feel and get clear on the support they will need as they execute their plan.

Today, I am sharing these questions in hopes that it helps you as well. Perhaps there’s an area in your business you want to give extra attention to, or maybe there’s a passion project you want to dive into, before the end of the year.

Here are four questions to consider as you create your plan to rock out the end of the year:

Do you have any major events coming up (e.g. Travel, birthdays, anniversaries, wedding, moving, new job, holidays)?

If you will be starting a new job, you know that there is going to be an adjustment period. So, you’ll want to take that into consideration when planning your goals for your side hustle.

You can guess, but you really won’t know until you start, how many extra hours you’ll have to work, what your energy will be like when you come home, or if you’ll have to do any extra traveling, etc.

It may be a good idea to not be as aggressive with your goals during this time. Give yourself a little more wiggle room in your schedule than usual.

What are the obstacles that you foresee getting in your way, slowing you down, or stopping you?

Outside of my business, I work full-time. I get things done in the evenings and on the weekend. Saturday is a very important day for me because that’s when I get the bulk of my content done.

One obstacle I saw getting in my way was distractions while working at home on Saturdays. To circumvent this, I made the commitment to join a co-working space where I can work part-time. I also work from home during the week, so the second bonus to this is having a change of environment.

Think about your obstacles, and plan for ways that you can bypass them.

What spiritual, physical, emotional, and mental support (i.e. self care) will you need to ensure your success?

My accountability partner and I were both sharing our goals for the rest of the year. And ironically, we both had goals that pertained to our well-being, in addition to our business goals.

This is important to take into consideration, to make sure that you have everything you need to be at your best. What do you need in order to keep your cup filled?

Do you need to plan for a yoga class once a week? Sign up for a meal prep service? Plan for a monthly day off? Or maybe you need to make a regular appointment with your therapist.

Give yourself what you need. Self-care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity, and you must make time for it so that you can be at your best.

What outside support will you need (i.e. technology, delegation, expertise, community)?

You can’t do it all alone. So, once you’re gotten clear on your goals, your obstacles, and the self-care that you need, it’s time to consider what outside support you need.

  • Is there any technology you can invest in to help support your business operations?
  • What tasks can you delegate to someone else to free up your time and mental space?
  • Who’s expertise do you need to invest in to be successful with your goal?
  • Are you in need of a community?

The better supported you are, the farther you will you go in less time with less headaches.

I hope you find these tips helpful. The end of the year can be an anxious time. As this time approaches, I usually feel a sense of urgency. I naturally put a lot of pressure on myself to get it all done before the clock strikes twelve on New Year’s Eve.

But when I start to feel that way, I ask myself the above four questions. And I implement the necessary support I need to get it done in a balanced way.

If you’re feeling this way, and you’d like some support in creating a plan, with balance and freedom, I’m here to help.
